The Watch Begins
In addition to watching the approaching tropical cyclone, we are also reviewing the daily ice forecasts. Our plan is to fly to Goose Bay and then Nain, Labrador to meet our vessel the MV Cape Race. In recent weeks, Nain has been icebound, so our plans may change to rendezvous with the boat in a more reliable location further south. Looking at yesterday’s ice report, I can see that there is significant ice cover in the Davis Strait… our snorkeling destination. We’ll have to watch closely and plan our route and work within the confines of the weather. The fact that there is significant ice moving down the coast to Newfoundland this year may be a telltale of warming. The sea ice is breaking up and heading south in large quantities.
