Originally published in DIVER Magazine in my Final Cut Column Let’s begin this column with Jill’s true confession: I have a bit of a light fetish. I can’t seem to stop buying new lights. Headlamps, solar rechargeable, hand-cranked lanterns, cinema lighting, LED key fobs and endless cave diving and video lights. I have them all. And this doesn’t include the numerous bicycle lights my husband Robert and I have collected, because, well, I can pin that one on him. Whew, I’m glad to finally share this and get it off my shoulders. The fact is, lighting has improved exponentially since…
By Alex Rose – Huffington Post How to Take Long Showers and Still Save the World From Drought Posted: 03/16/2015 6:56 pm EDT Updated: 03/16/2015 7:59 pm EDT Worried about California’s water crisis? NASA research says the state only has a one year supply left in its reservoirs and some people are sweating. I was at a gym in Los Angeles and left the water running while shaving in the locker room. Somebody walked up to me and asked, in the most condescending tone possible, “How much water do you think you’re wasting?” His heart was in the right place. His math wasn’t. If you…
Photography without Strobes Today I decided to take a fun dive with my girlfriends Renee Power and Pam Wooten. It was a casual day of diving and that gave me the freedom to experiment. I’ve been testing the Aquatica AGH4 housing with the Panasonic Lumix GH4 camera and decided to shoot some still photos. I was determined to forego using any strobes. Light & Motion offers an interesting suite of lights these days and I decided to use the new compact Sola 3000 video lights. Most of the time I used them on low power. I found the results to be…

I have been testing the Panasonic Lumix GH4 camera which was loaned to me by Aquatica in Canada. I decided it would be a great idea to try to shoot broadcast quality underwater video using only items I could fit in a single carryon case. I packed the Aquatica AGH4 housing, camera, arms and a complete Light & Motion video light set in a Nanuk 935 wheeled carryon case and went to task. The resulting video had to be downsized for the internet, but it was shot in glorious 4k Ultra HD quality. The camera shot some unbelievable stills too (well…
When preparing the Explorer rebreather you will eventually reach the point where you are prompted to complete a pre-breathe. If you have difficulties getting through the five-minute sequence, try this tip. Begin by exhaling into the counterlungs until full, then start your pre-breathe in a safe seated position. By launching the sequence with “dirty air,” the unit will quickly jump into action to raise the PO2 and you will easily work through the pre-breathe without getting timed-out for inadequate ventilations. If you want to speed up your pre-dive check, add an optional CO2 sensor and watch the sequence shorten to one…
American Whitewater kayaker and journalist Tom Legere describes how listening to an interview of Jill Heinerth lead him to better understand the risks and rewards of whitewater kayaking. Read the article here. AmericaWhitewater The original interview of Jill Heinerth on CBC Radio program “Q” can be heard here.
Q. If one sensor reads higher than setpoint at 1.6 and two sensors read 1.2, what should you do? What do you suspect? A. Begin with a diluent flush. If all sensors are now in agreement, don’t stop there. If it happens again, you may have a dual sensor failure. If you are using sensors that are old, they may not be able to achieve high values. The voting logic on your rebreather may reject two good sensors in this case. The best bet when you are suspicious of sensors is to bail to open circuit. If you are in…
