On July 7, 2015 Jill Heinerth had the opportunity to assist in the documentation of the recovery and delivery to provincial conservators of the sextant from the WWII shipwreck SS Rose Castle. The Rose Castle was sunk on November 2nd, 1942 by a German U-Boat that was attempting to disrupt the supply of high grade iron ore coming from Bell Island, Newfoundland, Canada. The event  also marks the only time a torpedo struck land in what is now Canadian soil. 28 crew were lost, but many were saved by citizens of the island. The sextant was discovered by diver Luc Michel…

Light Management in Technical Diving

I carry a tiny handheld Light and Motion Sola Tech600 for my primary light while technical diving. I love being unencumbered. No cord. No canister. Lightweight for travel. Some of my diving colleagues have asked about whether such a small light can have adequate runtime for two serious cave or technical dives in a day. The answer is unequivocally, “yes!” The Sola Tech600 offers up a robust nine hours maximum burn time. Better yet, you can easily monitor the remaining capacity as you dive. This feature alone provides an unprecedented advantage over other lights. It acts as a fuel gauge,…

Advanced Lighting for Video

By | All Posts, Underwater Photo and Video | No Comments

Most underwater videographers buy a couple of lights and mount them to their camera on arms, illuminating the environment, or a dive buddy at close range. Camera-mounted lights are generally acceptable for highlighting the main subjects in a scene, whether they be fish, fellow divers or a beautiful reef. However, if you want to elevate your creative underwater game, you may want to become familiar with “Practical Lighting Techniques.” Practical light sources are defined as lighting sources that appear in a frame and can be perceived as a part of the on-screen world. In other words, they appear “justified.” (Sometimes…

Chester the manatee is making his debut! I approved the final proof this morning and placed an order for the first shipment of books. I am really excited to offer up a beautifully illustrated children’s book that will help instill and environmental ethic at an early age. Sometimes I am not sure if it is too late to change the core values and daily practices of adults, but I know I can help kids to love their water resources and want to protect them. I’ll make a post as soon as the books are available of sale. All proceeds continue…

We’re very close to releasing a children’s book that will help teach lessons about water conservation. Beyond that message, it helps build self esteem in kids to teach them that anything is possible and that their own unique qualities will help save the world! We want every young person to feel empowered to take on great things. The book is a part of the mission of We Are Water and we hope to publish it in numerous languages for a wide audience.

Originally published in my DIVER Magazine column Final Cut – March 2015 Choosing the Right Memory Card for Your Camera Digital cameras use a removable storage device in the form of a memory card in order to store your  video and photo files. When you tear open the box of  a new camera, you sometimes  need to temper your excitement. That new camera may not include a memory card, which means delayed gratification and yes, spending a few more dollars before you can use your new device. Flash memory cards use solid-state technology, meaning that there are no moving parts…

Selecting a Great Video Light

By | All Posts, Underwater Photo and Video | No Comments

Originally published in DIVER Magazine in my Final Cut Column Let’s begin this column with Jill’s true confession: I have a bit of a light fetish. I can’t seem to stop buying new lights. Headlamps, solar rechargeable, hand-cranked lanterns, cinema lighting, LED key fobs and endless cave diving and video lights. I have them all.  And this doesn’t include the numerous bicycle lights my husband Robert and I have collected, because, well, I can pin that one on him. Whew, I’m glad to finally share this and get it off my shoulders. The fact is, lighting has improved exponentially since…
