Swimming in this sculpture park in Grenada was a rather transformational experience. At first I thought the visibility was not great and the reef was a little rough in the shallows, but I slowed down and really studied what I was seeing as if I was looking at a sculpture in a gallery. I started to notice the little things. The human forms were casts of real people. The yellow-headed woman looked so strong and resolute. Do you think she knows that the reef is turning her into fire coral? Why are others being consumed in lumps of sponge. Some hold hands with bouquets of colorful sponge erupting between their fingers. Did a little sense of each person transfer into their own cement self?
To me, the installation was life and death. Corals are not as healthy as they were thirty years ago. Algae covers the reefs of the Caribbean. Yet, the optimist in me won out. The sculptures are growing. They are springing new colorful life. Our ocean can heal itself.
I entered the water pessimistic and tired. I came out renewed.
